5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Makers Business

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE OPENING MY SHOP!

ONE

Niche down! Bet you're tired of hearing that word. Pick something that you love to make. Don’t just pick an item because you see another maker selling them. It needs to be something you enjoy and consumers want! Get really specific about it! If you're selling homemade soap for Moms, maybe you're selling them to first time moms who are struggling with postpartum and need something to help unwind.

TWO

Open a website or ETSY platform sooner. I definitely waited too long to create this. Having platforms for customers to browse through, make it more efficient for them and you! Having shipping available also helps you reach out to a wider audience.

THREE

Don’t compare your chapter to someone else’s story! It's easy to get distracted. Stay focused on what your goals and plans are for your shop. Get a calendar and record what your monthly tasks are to stay on track.

FOUR

I wish I was more tech savvy when I started and understand the importance of bright and clear photos. Download a photo editing app. I love lighthouse to create professionally edited photos that will accent your products.

FIVE

Don’t be afraid to say no! Not every order has to be completed by you. Your time has to be taken into consideration. Not to mention, if you're bringing in new supplies just for one order. You're better off to refer your client out to another vendor. That also helps improve your customer service as well, because your client will get exactly what they require and faster.
